Following the Canvas Learning Management System (CLMS)’s security issues experienced by Far Eastern University (FEU) last Friday, site developer Instructure released a statement in response to its cybersecurity breach today, May 12.
According to Instructure Chief Executive Officer Steve Daly, they struck an agreement with the perpetrators in return for the stolen information during the cyberattack.
Instructure confirmed a data breach of their website last May 2.
The hackers, ShinyHunters, claimed to have breached nearly 9,000 schools worldwide with 275 million data affected, including faculty, students, and staff.
The compromised data included usernames, email addresses, course names, enrollment information, and messages. However, there was no ‘core learning data’ hacked.
“[Canvas] is [now] fully operational and remains safe to use,” Daly added.
FEU first issued an advisory regarding the ongoing maintenance of the CLMS last May 8, with the platform going back online at 2:40 p.m. on the same day.
The University closely monitored the incident along with the relevant offices for further security measures. Students were also advised to remain cautious with emails and rely on official channels for updates.
