Far Eastern University (FEU) Office of Student Discipline (OSD) reminded students to maintain the dress code policy in line with the University’s professional image and integrity.
OSD first announced the prohibition of altering Institute polos by cutting or adding designs last September 13.
Moreover, the discipline office outlined the prohibited civilian clothes through illustrations such as slippers, shorts, spaghetti tops, and others.
In an online interview with FEU Advocate, OSD Director Johnelyn Tangpus underlined the importance of proper attire in compliance with the Student Code of Conduct.
“It is important to wear your Institute polos as they are, to maintain the professional image and integrity of our Institution. The Student Code of Conduct requires proper attire on campus and during school-related activities. Violating this dress code is an offense,” she said.
While FEU students acknowledged the necessity of wearing the prescribed uniform, some deemed the civilian attire policy unnecessary and observed inconsistencies with its implementation inside the campus.
“I see students in the halls wearing sleeveless tops and short skirts, and I wear sleeveless tops too, especially when it’s hot, but I never get questioned about it on campus, just at the gates,” said second-year Communication student Sofhia Ramona Marie De Castro.
De Castro added that OSD should just let students wear what they want if the policy is only imposed to a certain extent.
Similarly, second-year Psychology student Maria Ysabel Almario claimed that the dress code goes against the Institution's commitment to foster students’ self-expression.
“I think limiting students to wear what they want to wear is oppressive… FEU prides itself on their students' self-expression, what is keeping them from giving it to the students fully?” she stated.
On the other hand, OSD insisted on the dress code policy’s relevance in cultivating a positive learning environment.
“Following our dress code policy fosters a sense of community and belonging, ensuring that all students feel valued and respected. By upholding these guidelines, we also create an environment that prepares students for success in the professional world,” Tangpus said.
Meanwhile, FEU Central Student Organization inquired with OSD about the dress code’s specifics and conditions last September 13 and 14.
In response, OSD clarified that the advisory is merely a reiteration of the existing School Attire and Civilian Policy.
According to the OSD director, they are currently working on including real-life photos or examples of the encouraged appropriate attire, including the correct length for cropped tops and skirts for further clarification.
Meanwhile, the deadline for enforcing the Type B uniform or Institute Polo for freshmen and transferees has been extended until September 30.
