Far Eastern University (FEU) Tamaraws prevailed in the first round of the stepladder format with their four-set victory against the De La Salle University (DLSU) Green Spikers, 25-21, 19-25, 25-22, 25-22, in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Season 85 men's volleyball tourney held at the Smart Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City earlier today, May 3.
The Tams dominated the Green Spikers early in the first set behind green-and-gold blocker Rey Sabanal's five points and rookie Dryx Saavedra's four markers.
Following a well-rounded 25-21 win in the first set, FEU fell to errors and perfectly-timed blocks by La Salle, losing the second set, 19-25.
In a post-game interview, player of the game Mark Calado who scored 22 points in this match mentioned that composure was his main reminder to the team whenever La Salle went on runs to chip away their lead.
"Lagi ko naman pong sinasabi [at] hina-huddle sila na balik lang po sa game, and mag-compose, at huwag kalimutan mag enjoy… Lalo na kapag nahabol, nakaka-tatlong sunod ‘yung kalaban tapos medyo off [kami] (I always say when we huddle that we stay in the game, stay composed, and don't forget to enjoy. Especially when they catch up, when they score three straight our energy is off)," he said.
The Morayta-based squad corrected their course in the third set with Calado and middle blocker Martin Bugaoan leading the way with seven points and five points, respectively.
Calado remained dominant in the fourth set, scoring six more markers along with green-and-gold libero Bryce De Guzman who gave extended possessions to the Tams with his four crucial digs.
The Rei Diaz Jr.-led team won the set behind the match-point attack by Morayta-based spiker JJ Javelona.
FEU rookie Saavedra and team captain Jelord Talisayan both chipped in 12 points, while De Guzman finished with 22 receptions and 14 excellent digs.
The Tamaraws advance to the next round of the UAAP stepladder format as they face the University of Santo Tomas Golden Spikers on Sunday, May 7 at the same venue.
