In its 13th year, Far Eastern University’s official student publication, FEU Advocate, is set to host MEMO XIII:  “Fortifying Citizen Journalism in the New Media Age” on April 23 from 9:00 am to 11:35 am. MEMO XIII is a revival of FEU Advocate’s annual seminar centered on the roles of the press, both on and off-campus, in the nation.

This year, FEU Advocate utilizes a video conferencing platform in order to invite various student publications and organizations from Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao to partake in the upcoming event. This event invites three speakers to discuss journalistic integrity, disinformation in media, and citizen journalism.

Upholding Journalistic Integrity

Ben Domingo Jr., the Chairperson of the Commission on Higher Education’s Technical Committee for Journalism, leads the session on how participants can adhere to the ethics of journalism. Domingo is further acknowledged as the Father of Barefoot Journalism (Peryodismong Yapak). He will be discussing the principles of ethical journalism reporting the truth and the truth only.

Disinformation and Decreasing Trust in Media

Break the Fake Movement’s lead organizer Gabriel Billones Jr. will give a talk on the effects of disinformation and media skepticism in light of misinformation and fake news brought by media consumption. He shall deliberately talk about whether the media we consume is the truth or not. The Break the Fake Movement is an organization focused on promoting responsible digital citizenship and media literacy.

Citizen Journalism

Head of Bayan Mo, Ipatrol Mo and ABS-CBN News Public Service, and former Chairperson of the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP) Rowena Paraan will share her knowledge on the public’s role in responsible journalism. The seminar will be about the citizen’s part in upholding ethical journalism and how we can make use of the information that is given to us.

Spearheaded by FEU’s official campus publication, MEMO XIII aims to instill the significance of principled reporting through an insightful seminar by experts in the field of journalism.

Further updates and information will be available on FEU Advocate’s official Facebook page  in the days leading up to the event.
