Crime of the Times

Filipinos live inside an antique clock,

Which turns its erratic hands of time.

We swing along to its broken pendulum,

Setting negligence as our way of life.

While some are locked in compliance,

One man holds a key to wind the gears.

He twists it before the judge’s gavel strikes,

Stalling each hour with his countless appeals.

His act then turns the clock into a faulty scale.

Even with bodies hanging from its hands—

Weighing down the hour and minute in place—

He remains beyond justice’s reach.

When the same key that winds decree,

Lets the hands of the accused roam free,

How will the clock’s hands ever reach,

The awaited hour when the verdict rings?
