Far Eastern University (FEU) students held a Prayer Vigil and Candle Lighting event following the death of third-year Medical Technology (MedTech) student, Keilo Acuin, at the FEU Gate 4 last July 20.
In commemoration of Acuin's loss, fellow students, progressive groups, and friends of Acuin all wore black as they took part in the ceremony.
Kabataan Partylist FEU Chairperson Ryan Ferrer was one of the individuals who gave a short speech at the event.
“‘Yung edukasyon na dapat ay—supposedly—ay pampasigla natin, nagiging source pa mismo ng paghihirap natin, napakahirap ng ngayong nangyayari (Education that should supposedly be our motivation is now becoming the source of our suffering, the affairs right now are incredibly difficult),” they expressed.
Acuin was reported to have met his demise after a fatal fall from a footbridge along España Boulevard in the early hours of July 17.
His passing has sparked public dialogues concerning the welfare of FEU students, notably within the Institute of Health Sciences and Nursing (IHSN).
The FEU Central Student Organization (FEUCSO) and the IHSN Student Council have taken measures through statements advocating for the wellbeing of students, especially in light of learning disparities.
The official FEU Facebook page also released a statement upon Acuin’s passing.
“Our deepest sympathies go out to Keilo’s family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time. We ask everyone to kindly respect their privacy and join us in offering prayers and heartfelt condolences. May their hearts find solace and healing, as we stand in solidarity with them,” the statement read.
