Someday, I’ll Be a Turtle

Someday, I'll be a turtle.
I will gnaw on plastics
like they were made for me—
be cradled by the currents
until I cannot breathe.

I will swim the waves, and skim the reefs,
wear garbage crowns like stolen grief.
And until such pain has whittled down,
I will carry the weight without a sound.

Someday, I'll be a turtle.
I'll crawl back to the sand
then bask beneath the soft sun
like it's the first time I'm coming home.
I'll rest where the waters no longer call.

Someday, I'll be a turtle
and live long enough to tell the tragic tale
of our breaking hearts and shells.

And someday, all I will need
is a little water, and a little sand
I can call home.
