Far Eastern University (FEU) second-year International Studies (IS) students secured third runners-up for the European Union (EU) Whiz 2024 Finals, held at SM Aura in Taguig City last October 24.

Team 18, composed of John Harvey Lacatan, Abigail Kyla Pamintuan, and Hailey Seloterio, advanced to the final leg of the competition after three elimination rounds.

The group bested fourth overall from 32 groups and 21 participating schools from across the Philippines.

In an interview with FEU Advocate, Seloterio expressed their excitement in being able to compete in the championship round.

“When it was announced that we ranked third out of the 32 universities in the grand finals, we were beaming with joy, gratitude, and pride.” Seloterio said.

Additionally, FEU Institute of Arts and Sciences (IAS) Associate Dean Francis Esteban held study sessions and focused group discussions to prepare for the competition.

"Our adviser, Sir Francis, was also very engaging and helpful during our study sessions, and made sure that we learn something everytime we leave our focused group discussions," Lacatan shared.

The participants were accompanied by IS Department Chair Agnes Silva during the finals round, extending her support throughout the competition.

"Our department chair, Miss Agnes, supported us by approving our participation and her unwavering support—even accompanying us to SM Aura for the finals—showing her support to the Team 18," Pamintuan expressed.

Organized by the Delegation of the European Union in the Philippines, the EU Whiz is an annual quiz bee covering various topics, ranging from different information to EU history, with participation of college students all over the country.

This year, the Philippines and the EU with 27 member states is celebrating its 60-year partnership, fostering ties, and healthy diplomatic relationships.
