Cheerdance, while a powerful tool for boosting team morale, is also a full-fledged sport that demands strength, artistry, and passion—qualities that the Far Eastern University Cheering Squad (FEUCS) embody like no other. From jaw-dropping stunts to explosive routines and high-energy performances, they’ve captivated audiences and inspired their teams. Since their first big win in 1998, they’ve consistently set stages ablaze, channeling raw energy and unshakable pride into every performance, all while redefining what it means to carry the Tamaraw name.
The FEUCS’ journey to greatness began with their third-place finish in the inaugural 1994 University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Cheerdance Competition (CDC), a milestone that laid the foundation for their first win in 1998.
This victory was a defining moment that set the tone for the squad’s dominance in the years to come. With precise choreography, stunning stunts, and an undeniable energy, the group quickly earned a reputation for excellence, further solidified by back-to-back bronze finishes in 1999 and 2000.
Their performances became a true reflection of the Tamaraw spirit: wit, grit, and creativity which has easily become the crowd’s favorite.
A key figure in the Morayta-based success story is their head coach, Randell San Gregorio. Under his leadership, the squad has reached unparalleled heights in the UAAP Cheerdance Competition.
He brought a fresh perspective and innovative approach to the team’s training and routines and his commitment to excellence and his ability to combine strength with creativity have been pivotal in shaping their identity.
The FEUCS journey through the years has been nothing short of spectacular, with their performances consistently igniting the Tamaraw spirit.
In UAAP Season 79, the green-and-gold squad took audiences on a theatrical journey with their Broadway-inspired performance. Vibrant costumes and magical choreography turned the stage into a dazzling spectacle, earning them a well-deserved second-place finish.
Two years later in Season 81, they embraced nostalgia, transporting us back to the 70’s with a throwback routine. Retro music, costumes, and high energy stunts combined seamlessly to create a lively, crowd-pleasing atmosphere. However, it was National University (NU) that claimed the top spot that year, leaving the Tamaraws yearning for redemption in the coming seasons.
By season 82, they paid homage to the ‘King of Pop’ with an unforgettable Michael Jackson routine. Flawlessly executing the iconic ‘Moonwalk’ and blending pop culture with athleticism.
Once again, it was NU that triumphed, taking home the championship while FEUCS secured second place once again. The Tamaraws were closer than ever, but the Bulldogs' victory left them hungry for redemption, as they set their sights on returning to the top.
From honoring the King to celebrating the Queen, the cheerdancers reached new heights in UAAP Season 84 with a bold Queen-inspired performance. Stunning costumes, dynamic choreography, and a tribute to the legendary band’s iconic music helped them secure their long-awaited championship title after 11 years.
This victory was especially sweet after the back-to-back wins by the Bulldogs in the previous seasons, which left the Tamaraws determined to reclaim the crown. Finally, their relentless pursuit of excellence paid off, cementing their legacy on the UAAP stage.
2022 saw the squad celebrating Filipino pride with a Francis Magalona-inspired routine. Seamlessly blending hip-hop and street dance, they paid a heartfelt tribute to the national icon by showcasing the passion and unity that resonates within the FEU community, which bagged the silver title.
Building on this momentum, they delivered their most triumphant performance to date last year. With a Super Mario-themed routine, the squad seamlessly merged nostalgia with cutting-edge choreography, bringing the beloved video game to life and claiming their fourth championship title.
Throughout these years, FEUCS developed a signature approach by drawing influence from iconic figures in pop culture. This unique formula—infusing their performances with elements of music legends like Michael Jackson, Queen, and Francis Magalona—allowed them to stand out, creating routines that not only showcased their athleticism but also connected deeply with audiences on both a global and local level.
With 21 podium finishes and a recent championship title, the Tamaraws are far from satisfied. Their hunger for more is evident as they vie for a back-to-back victory, aiming for their third title in just four years.
Their consistency and growth have led some to call them a looming dynasty in the UAAP CDC.
Fueled by their past triumphs and a team of fierce competitors, the green-and-gold cheerdancers continue to raise the bar, determined to etch their name even deeper into the history of the competition. As they prepare for the next season, all eyes are on them to see if they can continue their dominance and prove that their reign is just beginning.
FEUCS’ legacy is not confined to the titles they have won, but in the pride and unity they inspire within the FEU community.
Every UAAP CDC season, Tamaraws—including alumni—eagerly await the chance to witness the team’s exhilarating routines, a tradition that unites generations of the University supporters in pride and excitement.
This year, the fervor was palpable, with tamaraws lining up as early as 1 AM, determined to secure their tickets and experience the electrifying atmosphere of the competition, further underscoring the significance of the event to the FEU community.
From culturally rich tributes to playful pop culture nods, these concepts remind us of the team’s talent for connecting with their audience on a deeper level.
As they continue to push boundaries and break new ground, the FEUCS remains an essential part of the school’s identity, inspiring the next generation to carry the torch of excellence.
As the upcoming competition draws near on December 1, all eyes are on how the reigning champions will bring their ‘Frozen’ theme to life. As they take the stage, we can only wonder how they will incorporate frosty elements into their vibrant routine—with cool stunts, sharp choreography, and enough heat to melt the ice of the competition. In the words of Frozen: “The cold never bothered them anyway.”
