Far Eastern University (FEU) Tamaraws Head Coach Olsen Racela emphasized that it was a must-win game after defeating De La Salle University (DLSU) Green Archers, 57-53, in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Season 85 men’s basketball tourney earlier today, November 2, at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
“Grinding out wins helps with the team’s character. Down the line, I think this will help us as long as we stay healthy. Wala eh, kailangan namin itong panalo eh (That’s really it, we needed this win),” he said.
During the first half, FEU had a dominating start after tallying 14 fastbreak points and 10 steals against La Salle’s four fastbreak points and three steals, 33-27.
Tamaraws’ momentum was tested in the third quarter as the Archers put pressure on the defense to cut the lead by one, 44-43.
Racela mentioned that he was simply waiting for one of his players to boost the team’s momentum once again.
“Naghihintay lang ako ng isang player na magstep up sa akin eh… I think none of my players really played well. Average lang in today’s game (I'm just waiting for a player to step up for me... I think none of my players really played well. Just average in today's game),” he stated.
FEU’s reinforcement Patrick Tchuente stepped up to play a crucial defensive role in the remaining minutes of the last canto as he delivered five markers with eight boards and four blocks to seal their fourth straight victory.
Green-and-gold gunners Xyrus Torres and LJay Gonzales also chipped in double digits with 12 points and 10 points respectively.
The Tamaraws now hold a 4-5 win-loss card and will attempt to obtain another win against the National University Bulldogs on Saturday, November 5 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City.
